The mid-year move most owners skip

The review that saves you next spring

July is nearly done, which puts seven months of 2026 on the books already. And most of the owners we talk to could not tell you, off the top of their head, whether that stretch put them ahead of last year or behind it.

That gap is the whole reason for this email.

This is the mid-year review we run with our clients, the same three-part look that turns a pile of receipts into a plan for the back half of the year. You can run it yourself this week, and everything you need to do it is right here.

1. Pull the books current through July 31, then read them closely.

Not skim. Read. Revenue by month, your three biggest expense lines, and what landed in profit. Put this year's first seven months next to last year's, side by side.

Most owners find one number that surprises them, a cost that crept up while they weren't looking, a slow stretch they'd already forgotten, a service that quietly became the moneymaker. That surprise is the point. Clean books aren't busywork, they're the instrument panel you steer by, and you can't steer a business at speed while looking at a panel from January.

2. Run a tax projection now, not in April.

The return you file next spring is already being decided by the moves you make right now. Take your actual profit through July, get a real projection of what a full year looks like, and put a number on what you're likely to owe.

If that number makes your stomach drop, you've still got five months to do something about it, adjust an estimated payment, time a big purchase, revisit how you're paying yourself. Wait until April and the only move left is writing the check. Taxes planned all year, not just filed in April. That line is on our wall for a reason.

3. Look down the road at what's coming.

The third-quarter estimated payment lands in September. Payroll filings don't take the summer off. And if you formed an entity or changed how you pay yourself this year, that comes with compliance strings that are easy to lose track of heading into August.

Spend twenty minutes mapping the next ninety days, known deadlines and big expenses against the cash you expect to collect. Zero tax panic comes from seeing the wall early, not from hitting it.

That's the review. Three moves, one afternoon, and a much clearer picture of where the year is headed.

If you get halfway through and realize the books aren't current, or the projection is more than you want to face alone, that's the part we take off your plate. We rebuilt our whole website this summer to lay it out plainly, fractional CFO guidance, bookkeeping, payroll, tax, and compliance, one team under one roof at www.sbsofsa.com.
