Five things, and that's really it.

These plants are hard to kill. That's why I picked them.

Water Enough to cover the little bump on the stem. Leaves stay above the water — they'll rot if you submerge them.
Light Bright, but not direct sun. A few feet back from a window is perfect. A desk under office lights works too.
Refresh Swap the water once a week. Fresh water carries oxygen, and roots need it. If it goes cloudy, change it sooner.
Patience Roots show up somewhere between two and six weeks. Nothing visible for the first stretch is normal.
Potting Once roots reach about two inches, move it into soil. Or leave it in water forever — it'll keep going.

Why I'm giving out plants

Roots before leaves.
